Built before Sultan Sanjar's death in 1157, the mausoluem would in it's time have been part of a complex of religious buildings rather than in its current isolation. In its day it was visible was visible to the Silk Road traveller a day's caravan ride away owing to its original covering of turquoise tiles. It has recently been restored although minus the tiles. It felt much more modern than the rest of Merv, probably because of its recent restoration but inside it was a rather peaceful, beautiful place. |
