The Abbasid commander, Abu Muslim, promoted urban development to the west of Gyuar Kala possibly because growing difficulties over access to water and Sultan Kala arose leaving Gyuar Kala a suburb of its successor.  The city had declined by the Mongol invasion in 1221 but its 11C walls still proved to be obstacle for the invaders who massacred everyone when they finall broke through.  It is said up to 1 million were killed in a few day.
