Miscellaneous monuments
The War Memorial was built in the 1970s to honour those who died in World War II and is one of the few monuments that doesn't feature a gold statue of Turkmenbashi. Mekan Palace features reliefs by the sculptor Ernst Neisvestniy. Built in the early 1970s it contains some quite anti-Soviet imagry. Lenin's statue is one of the few surviving in the ex-Soviet Union and probably the only one sitting on top of a tiled plynth inspired by Turkmen carpets. The foundation stone was laid on the day of Lenin's funeral in 1924 and it was completed in 1927.
