fasil ghebbi (Royal Enclosure)

The 17th century walled compound contains six castles and complex of connecting tunnels and walkways. Fasilida's Castle was built in 1640 and has recently been restored with UNESCO funding. Iyasu's Castle, (built during his reign 1682-1706) was partially damaged by an earthquake in 1704 and further destroyed by British bombardment in WWII. The buildings show a heavy Portuguese influence although by this stage they had been expelled from the country by Emperor Fasil.
