around gonder
Guzara Castle was built over a former defensive royal structure during the reign of the deeply unpopular Susneyos in the first half of the 17th century. Susneyos converted to Catholicism and outlawed the Orthodox Church. He was finally forced to resign in favour of his son Fasil in 1632 who went on to declare Gonder the capital of Ethiopia - the first permanent capital city since 1270.
