Lake Tana is littered with island monestaries.  This one (actually on the shore rather than an island), was the first Ethiopian church we visited. A traditional round church it was built in the 16C with the murals painted between 100 and 250 years ago.  Less naive than some of the later ones we saw, the paintings were none the less quite gory in parts.
